Dragon Quest XI: latest trailer, details, footage, and screens

Over the past few days, Square-Enix shared quite a lot of details and screenshots for Dragon Quest XI: Sugisarishi Toki o Motomete, along with a new trailer, and some more gameplay footage.

Dragon Quest XI: Sugisarishi Toki o Motomete – Trailer and Footage

First, here’s the latest trailer / commercial for the game, which is basically a retrospective of the entire series. Square-Enix sure is going full nostalgia with that one! It looks like this is actually just the first episode in a series.

This trailer / commercial is from the Dragon Quest XI Countdown Event, where the game itself was showcased. Once again, we got to see both versions of the game, but for the very first time, we also saw the exact same areas and segments (same boss and everything). What’s more, the game was played in the 2D style on Nintendo 3DS, making the comparison with the PlayStation 4 version even more striking!

Here’s the gameplay footage:

During the livestream, some new details about the game were revealed, starting with a town called Samahdi, located in the desert.  In total, there are about 20 based in the game (including villages, towns, and castle). One of them is quite definitely Japan-inspired.

Before development began, the team went to Machu Picchu, and so you shouldn’t be surprised if you see something that was seemingly influenced by that place!

Dragon Quest XI: Sugisarishi Toki o Motomete features some monsters called “Incarnations of Time”, that you will frequently encounter throughout your adventure. Unfortunately, Yuji Horii didn’t say much more about them, as that would have been a spoiler… not surprising, with such a name.

Finally, a new gameplay system was revealed: Restricted Play. This allows you to set various restrictions, if you’re looking for a challenge. For example, a single screenshot was shown, with shopping restricted. Even if you go and talk to a shop owner, they won’t sell you anything. No doubt Square-Enix will provide more details about that rather neat feature in the near future.

Dragon Quest XI: Sugisarishi Toki o Motomete – Casino, horse racing

In the latest issue of Jump magazine, two new features: the Casino and horse racing.

The Casino is a staple of the Dragon Quest series, and naturally, it’s back in the latest enty. Using G (the game’s currency), you can get yourself some coins, which are used to play several casino games (such as slot machine, poker, roulette, and more). Your goal is to collect as many coins as possible, in order to trade them for wonderful prizes.

But that’s not all: you will also be able to take part in competitve horse races, which is apparently a pretty popular activity in some countries. During the race, you have not only to jump obstacles, but also deal with dangerous areas, and more. Naturally, there’s some items for you to claim as victory prize, though nothing prevents you from taking part in those races just to get the fastest time.

Finally, Jump magazine shares some minor details about the game, starting with a reminder about quests: you take on those to help people with their problems. They allow you to battle formidable enemies. There’s also medals: if you collect enough of them, you will get various rewards!

Dragon Quest XI: Sugisarishi Toki o Motomete – Smithing

Smithing is a gameplay system that allows you to create equipment yourself (instead of buying it in stores, or finding it somewhere in the world), but also strengthen it. You can do so a literally any camp. The first step is pretty simple: you have to find recipes (in bookshelves, for examples) and materials (in the world).

To strengthen equipment, you need some Restrike Gems, that you get when successful crafting something. You don’t need to worry about upgrading: your equipment doesn’t disappear even if you fail at upgrading it, so you can always try again later. You get a reaction from the protagonist when you’re doing well at smithing.
