[Japan] Famitsu sales for August 2016 (Software, Hardware, Publishers)
Yesterday, Famitsu provided its usual report for monthly sales in Japan, this time for August 2016 (August 1st – August 28th). The Nintendo 3DS did manage to snatch 3 of the Top 5 positions in the Software chart below. Unsurprisingly, Yo-kai Watch 3: Sushi / Tempura was the best-seller with 269 537 units sold (a significant drop from July 2016 sales: -67%).
Dragon Ball Fusions also did quite well, with 130 590 units sold during its first month. Along with Tales of Berseria, it allowed Bandai-Namco to grab the title of best-performing publisher in August with a total of 487 000 units sold. Finally, Etrian Odyssey V also made it to the Software Top 5, with 106 597 units sold during its first month.

Overall, August was a pretty slow month, despite the Summer holidays. That being said, Nintendo games sold pretty well: 281 000 units in total, despite the lack of new releases in August: that’s the strength of Nintendo’s evergreen titles! As for Level-5, it was the third most successful publisher, exclusively thanks to Yo-kai Watch 3.
Bandai Namco Games – 487.000
Nintendo – 281.000
Level 5 – 280.000
Hardware-wise, sales for the Nintendo 3DS were rather stable: it went from 110 106 units to 106 769 units. This may seem like a good performance… except that August was the Summer holidays month, so sales should have been better.
The comparison with August 2015 isn’t pretty either, due to both the age of the Nintendo 3DS, but also the fact that Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer came out last year and boosted sales back then.
As for the Wii U, it only sold 20 720 units: that’s not even 1/3 of August 2015 sales, which isn’t all that surprising. Splatoon simply doesn’t have the same kind of pull as it did last year.
