Japan – Media Create sales for Week 41, 2015 (Oct. 5-11) [Top 50]

***During week 41, two games came out on Nintendo platforms in Japan, and both are on Nintendo 3DS. The first one is Pro Yakyuu Famista Returns, which sold “only” 25 000 units at launch. This may seem like a poor performance at first glance, but it’s the opposite: the game sold much better than both Bandai-Namco and retailers expected, and it actually sold out during the week-end.

Depending on how fast Bandai-Namco ships new copies to retailers, Pro Yakyuu Famista could reach 50 000 units sold before the end of the month, and 100 000 units before the end of the year if sales remains strong enough for that.

Next, we have Chibi-Robo: Zip Lash, which sold pretty poorly. During the first four days, only 14 096 players chose to help the little robot save the world (or collect snacks!), which is way less than what Nintendo was expecting. Indeed, according to Famitsu, only 20-40% of all units sent to retailers were sold, which is not a good sign (sales are bound to be pretty frontloaded). This doesn’t bode very well for Chibi Robo’s future!

Unfortunately, it’s hard to say if those sales are due to the waning popularity of the franchise and/or the change from an adventure game to a platformer. One thing’s for sure: Nintendo is certainly not happy about them.

In the rest of the charts, pretty much everything is down, though the drop is limited (less than 20%) for Splatoon, Super Mario Maker and Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer. As for Picross 3D 2, its sales are down by 53%, which is actually slightly better than usual for a second week. Finally, we have Monster Hunter Diary Poka-Poka Airou Village DX, which makes a comeback in the Top 20 at #20.

Hardware-wise, there’s nothing really special to note this week. Nintendo 3DS sales are slightly down this week, with 23 566 units sold, which is a siginficant drop compared to the same week in 2014. Obviously, there’s a good reason sales were so high last year: the New Nintendo 3DS and the New Nintendo 3DS XL came out on October 10th, along with Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate!

Quite obviously, there was no way for the Nintendo 3DS to do as well as last year, even with a major game. And in the upcoming weeks, the difference between this year and 2014 will remain  quite noticeable.

As for the Wii U, sales are slightly down compared to last week with 11 594 units sold, but the drop is rather limited. Despite the lack of new releases, the console is still hovering above the 10 000 units/weeks threshold. But how long will sales remain at that level, since no new game will come out before next month?
