[Japan] Media Create sales for Week 43, 2016 (Oct. 24 – 30) [Top 50]

Media Create – Software

Week 43 saw the releases of quite a few games in Japan, but only one was on a Nintendo platform: River City Ransom SP (the Nintendo 3DS remake of the NES classic). Media Create reports that it sold 6 268 units during its first week on the market: that’s not a lot, but not surprising for a Kunio-kun game (especially a remake, delayed several times).

Overall, it was a pretty uneventful week for Nintendo platforms, and all games saw their sales drop. Monster Hunter Stories did rather well, with 15 440 units sold: that’s -40% compared to last week. Since launch, the game has sold over 248 000 units, and it will top 250 000 units sold next week (it already has if you count digital sales).

At this rate, it should top 300 000 units sold in early December, and if sales are good enough in December, 400 000 units before the end of the year. 350 000 units by the end of the year seems a more realistic goal, but we will see in the upcoming weeks the kind of sales we can expect during the holiday period.

As for Mario Party: Star Rush, it had a surprisingly “good” second week (compared to the awful first week), with 14 177 units sold (-46%). It should top 50 000 units sold next week, or the following week at the latest. After that, it will depend on how good holiday sales are: it most definitely is one of those titles that usually sell pretty well during that period, so it should be able to reach 100 000 units minimum before the end of the year.

Next, we have Yo-kai Watch 3: Sushi / Tempura at #15, with 5 046 units sold according to Media Create. Sales have been rather sluggish in the past couple of weeks, and there’s no doubt the announcement of Yo-kai Watch 3: Sukiyaki and Yo-kai Watch: Sushi + Tempura bundle are not helping. 1 296 887 units have been sold since launch, which means there are still about 24 000 units left from the first week shipments.

Finally, we have two Wii U games:

• 17./11. [WIU] Minecraft: Wii U Edition (Microsoft Game Studios) – 4.845 / 161.481 (-12%). Sales didn’t drop as much as for other titles this week, but they’re now dangerously close to those of the PSV version. It wouldn’t be surprising to see the latter start outselling the former for the first time since launch in the near future, though it’s not clear what will happen during the holiday period. The Wii U is most definitely the most family-friendly platform, but with how it has been selling in the past few months, the game will mostly appeal to current Wii U owners (thus limiting its sales potential);
• 19./07. [WIU] Paper Mario: Color Splash (Nintendo) {2016.10.13} (¥5.700) – 4.490 / 33.167 (-42%). Sales continue to be… not that great, and it’s not sure holidays sales will be that much better. With 33 167 units sold so far, the game will most likely top 50 000 units sold before the end of the year.

Unfortunately, Splatoon was pushed out of the Media Create Top 20 by the many new releases this week, and it’s not quite sure when it will get back in.

Media Create – Hardware

Hardware-wise, there’s once again nothing to be said about the Wii U this week. Sales are as flat as they can be, and rumours of Nintendo stopping its production this very Friday makes it clear one should not expect great sales in the upcoming weeks and during the holiday period (especially with a depressingly empty line-up).

As for the Nintendo 3DS, sales increased very slightly this week, with 25 660 units sold according to Media Create (+1 000 units), despite the lack of significant releases. The main reason for that increase seems to be payday, which always boost sales (very) slightly at the end of the month. Sales should drop again/remain stable next week, before going back up after that thanks to Pokémon Sun and Moon.

Fun fact: total Nintendo 2DS sales have topped 75 000 units, which is 6 000 units more than the Xbox One since launch. It should easily top 100 000 units sold before the end of the month, and end up around 200-250 000 units sold by the end of the year (maybe even more if holidays sales are really strong)

So far, the Nintendo 3DS has sold 21 349 853 units according to Media Create. To reach 22 million units before the end of the year, it needs to sell 650 147 units during the next 9 weeks. In other words, it needs 72 238 units / week, on average.
