Japan – Media Create sales for Week 47, 2015 (Nov. 16 – 22) [Top 50]

During Week 47, quite a lot of games came out in Japan, including several on Nintendo platforms. Let’s start right away with Animal Crossing: amiibo Festival, which sold rather poorly: only 20 303 units were sold during the first two days (it was released on a Saturday). According to Famitsu, the sell-through ratio for this game is somewhere between 0 and 20%.

There’s little doubt retailers aren’t too happy to be stuck with so many copies, and unless sales pick up during the holiday, they won’t wait long before heavily discounting the game. Worldwide, Animal Crossing: amiibo Festival seems to have sold poorly: it didn’t even chart in the Top 40 for the United Kingdom, for example. Unfortunately, we will most likely never get any data for it from Nintendo…

Next, we have Sumikko Gurashi: Omise Hajimerundesu, which sold 16 464 units during the first four days, which is a pretty decent debut. The original game, also on Nintendo 3DS, ended up selling over 100 000 units, which explain why retailers ordered so many copies. According to Famitsu, the sellthrough ratio is 20-40%, which is a bit low. However, there’s no doubt everything will be sold in the upcoming weeks.

Finally, we have the retail version of Pokémon Rumble World, which sold “only” 10 120 units during its first week. It may seem incredibly low (even for a Pokémon spin-off), but let’s not forget it’s simply the retail version of a Free 2 Start game. It originally came out on the Nintendo eShop, where it was one of the highest grossing titles according to Nintendo.

That being said, it looks like retailers were expecting more from the game, as it only sold 0-20% of its shipment at launch. It’s quite likely they’re expecting sales to pick up during the holiday period, which “officially” started on Monday (which was a public holiday).

In the rest of the chart, pretty much all games are down: that includes Splatoon (-16%), Yo-kai Watch Busters (-6%), and The Legend of Zelda: Tri Force Heroes (-23%). During its second week, Project X Zone 2: Brave New World dropped sharply: it went straight from #2 to #19 with 7 050 units sold (-83%). The only game up this week is Super Mario Maker, with +6% (13 184 units sold, 391 793 units in total).

Hardware-wise, roles are reversed this week: sales of the Nintendo 3DS are up, while those of the Wii U are down. Obviously, the reason Nintendo’s handheld sold better is because of the anticipation for Monster Hunter X (out this Saturday in Japan). The game will be accompanied by a New Nintendo 3DS XL bundle (with MHX), and a New Nintendo 3DS Pack (without MHX), so we should definitely expect a sizeable boost for the 3DS next week.

The Nintendo 3DS sold 35 724 units this week, which is more than 50% down compared to last year. As for the Wii U, it’s still up Year on Year, thanks to Splatoon mainly. This week however, sales are slightly down: the console sold 14 684 units, which is significantly better than last year during the same week (9 615 units). With the public holiday on Monday, and the start of the holiday period, Wii U sales should at the very least stay stable next week.
