[Japan] Media Create sales for Week 19, 2016 (May 9th – 15th) [Top 50]

Software
May is known as one of the worst periods of the year for video game sales in Japan (it’s during that month that the last week ever was recorded, last year), and naturally, things will not be any different in 2016. Both Software and Hardware sales dropped sharply, and for once, Nintendo platforms are impacted as badly as the competition.
Let’s start with the stars of the Golden Week, Kirby Planet Robobot and Yo-kai Sangokushi: their sales dropped by 70% and 69% respectively. Kirby Planet Robobot sold about 24 000 units, which brings the total since launch to 248 951 units: it missed the 250 000 units threshold by an inch! As for Yo-kai Sangokushi, it sold about 10 000 additional units during Week 19, and is now past the 500 000 units threshold.
Next, we have Dragon Quest Monsters Joker 3 at #7, which is crawling to 600 000 units sold. It’s currently sitting at 592 321 units, after selling 5 767 units (-59%) during Week 19. It will most likely need two weeks to reach 600 000 units sold.
As for the Splatoon x Super Mario Maker duo, it’s not doing too bad, but both games were hit by the drop in sales. Splatoon held slightly better, with 5 237 units sold (-45%). Super Mario Maker is also holding well with 4 030 units sold, despite Wii U sales dropping hard. Then again, it’s not like the other games in the Top 20 performed well this week…
And now that the Golden Week is over, two games on Nintendo 3DS are sliding towards the “exit”. The first one is the Happy Price Selection of Animal Crossing: New Leaf, with 2 498 units sold (over 45 000 units since launch, in March). It should remain in the Top 20 one more week, and will most definitely pop back up with public holidays.
As for Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympics, it will most likely leave the Top 20 next week. It sold 2 417 units during Week 19, and over 158 000 units since launch. Its sales should remain steady, and those should improve noticeably as we get closer to the actual Olympics. Finally, the Star Fox Zero + Star Fox Guard dual pack will permanently leave the Top 20 next week, after selling only 32 442 units since launch (2 214 units during Week 19, -59%).

Hardware
Hardware-wise, the drop in sales is as noticeable for Hardware as it is for Software.
The Nintendo 3DS went from 26 242 units to 17 595 units during Week 19, which is actually pretty “ok” for a post-Golden Week drop. Surprisingly enough, Nintendo’s handheld sold better during that week than it did last year during the same one, which is a rather positive sign. Unfortunately, sales are bound to remain sluggish until June and the next wave of releases.
As for the Wii U, it was hurt by shortages, the post-Golden Week drop, and the lack of new releases. It sold 3 896 units during Week 19, which is half of what it sold during the same week in 2015. Naturally, the next few weeks will not be pretty at all, especially since the next major release for the Wii U is Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympics on June 23rd. After that, there is simply nothing at retail until LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens, in October…
