[Japan] Media Create sales for Week 22, 2016 (May 30th – June 5th) [Top 50]

Media Create – Software

Week 22 was quite calmer for the video game market overall, with only one entry in the Top 20 from Media Create.

That being said, the games still in the Top 20 sold pretty well, especially on Nintendo platforms. For example, Kirby: Planet Robobot has now sold over 300 000 units since launch, with 14 832 additional units this week (-14%). As for Yo-kai Sangokushi, it sold 6 496 units during Week 22 (-13%), and 532 480 units since launch. It should be able to reach 600 000 units this year.

As for the usual Splatoon and Super Mario Maker duo, they’re among the chose few with sales on the rise this week, with 5 392 units sold for the former (+3%), and 4 815 units sold (+9%) for the latter. Those two titles are still holding due to their sheer popularity (Splatoon), and because they’re included in the default Wii U Premium Pack (Super Mario Maker).

Next, we have Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games at #16, with 3 344 units sold this week (+15%). The game has been gaining steam in the past couple of weeks, and it will be interesting to see how long it’s going to hold like that. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said of Dragon Quest Monsters Joker 3, which finally managed to crawl to 600 000 units sold since launch this week (602 831 to be precise), with 3 042 units (-11%) during Week 22.

Finally, we have Animal Crossing: New Leaf at #20, with 2 462 units sold (52 923 since the launch of the Happy Price Selection version). It’s quite impressive that a game from 2012 is still charting like this one, though obviously it’s also due to the overall market being pretty week at the moment (after all, only the Top 5 games sold over 10 000 units this week).

Media Create – Hardware

Hardware-wise, Week 22 was a pretty uneventful. The Nintendo 3DS sold (very) slightly better than during Week 21, with 15 909 units sold. Just like last week, it’s a bit worse than during the same week in 2015, but not a dramatic drop.

It’s from next week that things will get really interesting, with two new colours for the New Nintendo 3DS XL, and Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Spirit of Justice. And after that, there will be a series of mid to high-profile releases, that will culminate with Yo-kai Watch 3 (on July 16th) and Puzzle & Dragons X (on July 28th). And then, there will be the Summer holidays, in August.

Some pretty good months await for the Nintendo 3DS, and that’s when comparing sales with 2015 will become really interesting.

As for the Wii U, sales are pretty flat, but at least, they’re not dropping any lower. As explained last week, there’s game of Splatoon’s caliber to boost sales in 2016, which is why sales are down Year on Year. What’s more, Nintendo doesn’t want to ship more units (which is often not enough to meet demand), so it’s unlike that sales will be going up (in a significant manner) any time soon (at least, until the second Splatoon Wii U Premium Pack, in July).
