[Japan] Media Create sales for Week 31, 2017 (July 31st – August 6th) [Top 50]

This week, there’s only two entries in the Media Create Top 20, and one of them happens to be on the Nintendo 3DS. It’s Dai Gyakuten Saiban 2: Naruhodou Ryuunosuke no Kakugo, which had a pretty disappointing debut. Two versions were released:

• stand-alone: 69 848 units sold
• dual-pack (Dai Gyakuten Saiban: Naruhodou Ryuunosuke no Bouken + Dai Gyakuten Saiban 2: Naruhodou Ryuunosuke no Kakugo): 9 651 units

In comparison, the first entry sold almost twice as much: 136 191 units during launch week, according to Famitsu.

It’s perfectly normal for a direct sequel to sell less than its predecessor, but since Dai Gyakuten Saiban: Naruhodou Ryuunosuke no Bouken already underperformed, it’s no wonder than Dai Gyakuten Saiban 2: Naruhodou Ryuunosuke no Kakugo sold even less. With such sales, it would be pretty surprising for Capcom to continue with the Dai Gyakuten Saiban sub-series.

Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age had a pretty good second week, with 307 714 units sold on Nintendo 3DS. That’s a 73% drop compared to launch week, but that’s pretty standard for a JRPG during its second week. Besides, it’s all but guaranteed that the game will keep selling steadily on the long run, so even if you were to consider that second week drop “bad”, there really wouldn’t be anything to worry about.

With 1 456 601 sold since launch, Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age is already well on its way to 2 million units on Nintendo 3DS alone. Of course, it’s going to take a few more weeks for that to happen, but it will get there eventually. It could even reach 2.5 million units sold LTD, though that would depend on when the Nintendo Switch version is released, and whether it will have an impact on sales.

Meanwhile, Splatoon 2 kept selling steadily, helped by bigger Nintendo Switch shipments than before its release. It sold 74 235 units this week, only -30% compared to the previous week. As of Week 31, 827 646 units have been sold, which means Splatoon 2 should become the first million-seller on Nintendo Switch pretty soon… before the end of the month, in fact (especially with the bigger Nintendo Switch shipments expected for Obon).

As for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, it’s enjoying steady sales, helped by the Summer holidays and the bigger Nintendo Switch shipments. 13 764 units were sold this week, bringing the total to 615 633 units. While it’s also bound to sell over 1 million units, it’s definitely going to take (muc) longer than for Splatoon 2.

Layton’s Mystery Journey: Katrielle and the Millionaire’s Conspiracy is selling pretty decently so far, with over 100 000 units sold since launch (108 057 units to be more precise). It sold 12 699 units this week (-48%).

The upcoming weeks and months will tell us where this one is going to end when all is said and done, but so far, it’s pretty clear it will not be able to sell as much as its predecessor (Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy, with 252 805 units LTD).

Hey! Pikmin is also selling steadily, even though sales really are anything but extraordinary. It sold 8 493 units this week (-29%), bringing the total to over 100 000 units (107 887 units to be precise). If the game keeps selling throughout the rest of 2017, Hey! Pikmin may well end up with over 200-250 000 units sold LTD.

Oh, and if you were worried about ARMS getting overshadowed by Splatoon 2, it looks like there’s nothing to worry about… for now, at least. Sales were steady this week (thanks to the Summer holidays and the bigger Nintendo Switch shipments), with 5 472 units sold. This brings the total to 189 417 units since launch.

Once the Summer holidays are over, we will be able to see if ARMS has any potential on the long run. So far, it’s doing pretty well for a brand new fighting game IP, but it’s true that after Splatoon, anyone would be tempted to expect (much) more from it.

Next, we have The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild with pretty steady sales: 5 304 units (-9%). Total sales are now over 550 000 units: it’s standing at 554 123 units as of Week 31. If you add last known Wii U sales (133 024 units), the game has already sold 687 147 units. To reach 1 million units this year, the remaining 312 853 units need to be sold during the next 21 weeks, so 14 897 units/week.

And now, let’s take a look at how the games in the second half of the Top 20 have been faring:

• 12./08. [3DS] Sumikko Gurashi: Koko, Dokonan Desu? (Nippon Columbia) – 5.197 / 34.107 (-35%). Nothing much to say about this one, for now at least!
• 13./14. [3DS] Pokémon Sun / Moon (Pokemon Co.) – 4.321 / 3.304.705 (-18%). The drop in sales may be due to the stronger sales than usual during the past couple of weeks (especially the last one);
• 14./17. [3DS] Animal Crossing: New Leaf – Welcome amiibo (Nintendo) – 4.293 / 212.998 (+19%). A noticeable increase in sales, courtesy of the Summer holidays!
• 19./26. [3DS] Mario Kart 7 (Nintendo) – 2.823 / 2.799.235. Look who’s back in the Top 20 yet again? Yup, it’s Mario Kart 7;
• 20./27. [3DS] Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS (Nintendo) – 2.711 / 1.069.884. Thanks to the Summer holidays, this one makes its comeback in the Top 20.

With 61 933 units sold this week, the Nintendo Switch is back as the top-selling console in Japan. It looks like Nintendo really were not lying when they promised bigger shipments for the Summer period. There was a risk the company might concentrate exclusively on Splatoon 2 launch week, but it’s clearly not the case.

What’s more, early data shows that shipments for Week 32 (the current one) could be even bigger, which would not be surprising as Obon is just around the corner (Friday is a public holiday). In other words, it doesn’t look like Nintendo Switch sales should go down below 50 000 units for another few weeks. If everything goes well, total sales could top 1.5 million units by the end of the month.

Interesting fact: the majority of Nintendo Switch units shipped to retailers are Splatoon 2 bundles, which explains the strong sales for Splatoon 2 despite the limited userbase: said userbase is literally expanding alongside Splatoon 2.

As for the Nintendo 3DS, sales dropped by over 50% (with 60 889 units sold), but it was to be expected for the week following the one with Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age and its bundle. And yet, sales are still twice as good as last year during the same week (31 549 units were sold during Week 31 2016).

Looking at the separate sales for each model, it’s clear that the Nintendo 2DS is having a pretty positive impact on Nintendo 3DS. Without the Nintendo 2DS and the New Nintendo 2DS XL, sales would actually be down Year on Year. The new models are doing their job pretty well, which consists in sustaining sales.

To reach 24 million units before the end of the year, the Nintendo 3DS needs to sell 841 960 units during the next 21 weeks, so 40 093 units on average. It’s going to be tough for it to sell that much, especially in September-October. However, if Summer sales are strong enough, it should get a nice headstart to compensate for the upcoming slow months.

Finally, the Wii U sold 158 units this week.
