[Japan] Media Create sales for Week 33, 2016 (August 15th – 21st) [Top 50]

Media Create – Software

Usually, after public holidays, we always see a significant drop in sales. Week 33 is a bit different, due to Obon on Monday (that holiday was split between Week 32 and 33 this year). Therefore, the drop in sales isn’t that bad overall, especially for Hardware (it would have been way worse without Obon).

There was a couple of new releases this week, but nothing for Nintendo platforms. Media Create reports that Yo-kai Watch 3: Sushi / Tempura sold 62 343 units during its 6th week on the market (-33%). The game is holding well after last week’s big increase (due to holiday and major price drops), but is lagging behind its predecessors by a wide margin. It’s now sold over 1.1 million units since launch.

As for Dragon Ball Fusions, Media Create reports 18 343 units for its third week (-42%). That’s a pretty good hold so far, and unless sales drop like a rock in September, 200 000 units before the end of the year is definitely within reach.

The drop is more limited for Puzzle & Dragons X, which sold 16 370 units during Week 33: that’s -15% compared to Week 32. Unfortunately, this ultimately makes no difference, as sales are bound to drop harder next week.

Next, we have Kirby: Planet Robobot, which finally reached 400 000 units sold since launch (according to Media Create’s data, so excluding digital sales). As mentioned several times before, this new entry is lagging behind its predecessor (Kirby Triple Deluxe), but sales have remained quite steady since launch (especially during the past couple of weeks, thanks to the Summer holidays, the demo, and a new TV Commercial).

Minecraft: Wii U Edition is one of the only two titles which saw an increase in sales this week: +18%, with 9 786 units sold. Sales have been surprisingly steady for this late version, especially when it’s competing against the PS Vita version (which is down this week).

The other title which saw an increase in sales this week is Animal Crossing: New Leaf (3 626 units sold, +3%, 81 823 units sold since launch of the Happy Price Selection edition). Unfortunately, as the Summer holidays are drawing to a close, sales are bound to drop in the upcoming weeks: in fact, it should be out of the Top 20 by next week.

Pokémon Omega Ruby / Alpha Sapphire didn’t see an increase in sales, but the drop is pretty limited: only -9%. The renewed interest in the Pokémon series is still there, which allowed this game from 2014 to sell another 9 353 units at retail during Week 33, according to Media Create.

With 2 871 259 units sold since launch, the game could reach 3 million units LTD if sales remain strong until the end of the year. Unfortunately, Pokémon Sun and Moon will be there to make sure it doesn’t happen this year.

Next, let’s take a look at the sales of the two versions of Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympics:

• Nintendo 3DS: 8 155 units sold (-11%, 223 510 units since launch)
• Wii U: 7 297 units sold (-17%, 81 445 units since launch)

Now that the actual Olympics are over, we can expect sales to start dropping more sharply from next week (especially since the Summer holidays are almost over). On the other hand, Splatoon should keep selling steadily. Media Create reports 5 772 units sold for Week 33, which is a 8% drop. It should reach 1.5 million units sold at retail within the next couple of months.

Finally, let’s take a look at the sales of some Wii U / Nintendo 3DS games:

• 16./06. [3DS] Etrian Odyssey V: The End of the Long Myth (Atlus) – 4.636 / 109.676 (-63%). Sales dropped sharply during the third week on the market, following the usual sharp drop during the second week. That being said, Etrian Odyssey IV ended up selling about 139 000 units according to Famitsu, so this 5th mainline entry seems to be performing in line with its predecessor;
• 17./16. [3DS] Sumikko Gurashi: Mura o Tsukurundesu (Nippon Columbia) – 4.436 / 42.977 (-21%). We can expect this one to leave the Top 20 next week;
• 18./17. [3DS] 12-Sai. Koisuru Diary (Happinet) – 4.099 / 24.459 (-26%). Just like Sumikko Gurashi: Mura o Tsukurundesu, this title shouldn’t remain in the Top 20 much longer…

Media Create – Hardware

Hardware-wise, sales naturally dropped this week, but as mentioned above, it would have been worse if Obon didn’t fall on Monday. The Nintendo 3DS sold 28 807 units, which is only slightly below Week 33 sales (30 892 units sold). In fact, it’s even better than last year during the same period, when the Nintendo 3DS sold 28 279 units.

The next few weeks will be quite interesting, since the Summer holidays are drawing to a close. September, and especially October, are not the best of months for sales, and there’s no major title before Pokémon Sun and Moon in November.

Well… there is one: Monster Hunter Stories. However, it’s not clear which impact it will have on Nintendo 3DS sales, and so far, pre-orders don’t seem very good. Of course, it’s not a traditional Monster Hunter game, so the target audience isn’t quite the same (and more importantly, it’s not one that frequently pre-order games).

Talking of the Nintendo 3DS, the original model will reach 10 000 000 units sold next week. The New Nintendo 3DS will follow with one million units in September.

The Wii U is also down this week, with 4 702 units sold according to Media Create. Nintendo’s home console is back below the 5 000 units/weeks threshold, and it most definitely won’t go back up before the next public holiday. Unfortunately, that’s pretty much all there is to say about the Wii U this week, since the line-up for the platform is desperately empty.
