[Japan] Media Create sales for Week 36, 2016 (Sept. 5 – 11) [Top 50]

Media Create – Software

As we expected, Week 36 was a pretty poor week for the Japanese video game market, and that’s for both Hardware and Software. Software-wise, the best-selling game sold only 22 992 (that’s Yo-kai Watch 3: Sushi / Tempura), and only the Top 2 games sold more than 10 000 units…

There were a couple of new entries this week, but they didn’t manage to outsell Yo-kai Watch 3, which has now sold 1 204 651 units since launch (-20% this week). Retailers still have about 100 000 units left to sell, but they should have no trouble doing so during the upcoming weeks (may be before the end of October).

Quite surprisingly, Minecraft: Wii U Edition is still holding pretty well, despite Wii U sales dropping further and further every week. For Week 36, Media Create reports 7 356 units sold: that’s only 6% less from Week 35, which is pretty good given how sluggish the whole market is. Since launch, 114 628 units have been sold.

Next, we have Dragon Ball Fusions, the only game that’s up Week on Week according to Media Create. It sold 7 002 units during Week 36 (+1%), most likely due to promotion surrounding the Dragon Ball Super anime series. It’s now sold over 150 000 units since launch, and 250 000 units LTD seems well within reach (maybe before the end of the year, if holiday sales are strong enough).

Now let’s take a look at some Wii U and Nintendo 3DS titles which haven’t left the Media Create Top 20 in the past few months:

• 05./04. [3DS] Puzzle & Dragons X: God Chapter / Dragon Chapter (GungHo Online Entertainment) – 6.229 units this week (-26%) / 169.170 units since launch. Despite selling pretty poorly compared to its predecessor, Puzzle & Dragons X sales haven’t dropped like a rock following its launch;
• 06./07. [3DS] Kirby: Planet Robobot (Nintendo) – 5.806 units this week (-18%) / 428.339 units since launch. Summer may be over, but the little pink ball isn’t going to drop out of the Top 20 any time soon, it seems!
• 13./12. [WIU] Splatoon (Nintendo) – 4.213 units this week (-10%) / 1.465.416 units since launch. Its sales have taken a hit in the past few weeks (now that the Summer holidays are over), but they remain steady enough despite the poorer and poorer Wii U sales;

As for Pokémon Omega Ruby / Alpha Sapphire, it’s still hanging around in the Top 20 with 5 082 units sold this week (-24%). Pokémon GO definitely doesn’t have the same pull as it did in August, but its impact can still be felt. 2 889 923 units have been sold since launch, and 2 900 000 units will be reached before the end of the month.

And if you’re wondering if the two versions of Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympics are still selling despite the end of the actual Olympics, the answer is… yes!

• Nintendo 3DS version: #16 this week, with 3 009 units sold (-27%, 235 952 units since launch)
• Wii U version: #18 this week, with 2 709 units sold (-28%, 92 741 units since launch). This version will most likely be ousted next week (maybe along with the Nintendo 3DS version)

Finally, we have Animal Crossing: New Leaf at #20, which sold 2 540 units this week (-13%), and 90 273 units for the Happy Price Selection edition. It will be gone next week, and will most likely not reappear until the release of the “Welcome amiibo” version in November.

NB: next week, several titles will be added to the Happy Price Selection range (full list in this post). They should sell reasonably well for budget re-releases.

Media Create – Hardware

Hardware-wise, Week 36 was pretty uneventful. Nintendo 3DS sales were surprisingly steady last week, but for Week 36, Media Create reports an inevitable and expected drop. That said, the drop is rather limited: sales went from 24 443 units to 20 831 units.

Compared to last year, the drop amounts to about 7 000 units, which is pretty acceptable for an aging console during one of the slowest week of year (maybe of all times!). Also, the lack of releases didn’t help, just like the upcoming launch of the Nintendo 2DS (which will be accompanied by quite a few new releases).

To reach 22 million units before the end of the year, the Nintendo 3DS needs to sell at least 857 012 units within the next 16 weeks. In other words, it needs 53 563 units / week, on average. As explained last week, this will not be possible during most weeks (especially in October), and the key will be:

• holiday period (late November to late December)
• the launch of the Nintendo 2DS

Talking of the Nintendo 2DS, it’s launching tomorrow (September 15th). It should have a noticeable impact on sales, but it should remain limited (one should not expect sales in the 75-100 000 units range). After all, it’s during the holidays that the Nintendo 2DS is truly going to shine, with parents buying it for their kids.

As for the Wii U, it looks like we shouldn’t have said that the Wii U wasn’t going to go below 4 000 units/week for the time being… because that’s exactly what happened this week. Sales dropped to 3 527 units, which is almost 7 times less than during the same week last year (about 21 000 units). Unfortunately, sales are not going to go back up any time soon (at least not until October 13th, and Paper Mario: Color Splash).
