[Japan] Media Create sales for Week 37, 2016 (Sept. 12 – 18) [Top 50]

Update: added the full Media Create Top 50 for Software. We can see that the new Happy Price Selections didn’t do too hot during their first week, as Mario Tennis Open landed at #32, The Legend fo Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D at #45, and Fire Emblem Awakening at #48. Also, the retail version of Terraria on Wii U did really poorly: it almost didn’t make it into the Top 50, as it landed at #49.

Media Create – Software

After two pretty poor weeks, Week 37 see a significant improvement in both Software and Hardware. This is due to some popular releases, though the only one on a Nintendo platform didn’t do all that well. It’s Sentouchuu: Kyuukyoku no Shinobu to Battle Player Choujou Kessen!, which only sold 6 590 units during the first four days. Sales on the long run will be key for this title… provided there’s any.

Unfortunately, none of the new Nintendo Selects titles managed to chart in Media Create’s Top 20, which isn’t all that surprising (they’re just budget re-releases, after all). It’s during the holiday period that those titles are truly going to shine. The Wii U version of Terraria didn’t chart either.

As for Yo-kai Watch 3: Sushi / Tempura, the release of the Nintendo 2DS didn’t really have any sort of impact on its sales. In fact, they dropped by 14%, with 19 726 units sold. Since the game has now sold 1 224 376 units since launch, that means retailers are still sitting on about 76 000 unsold units (that they will not have any trouble to sell in the upcoming weeks).

Talking of the Nintendo 2DS, and its impact on sales, let’s take a look at how various Nintendo 3DS fared this week:

  • 09./05. [3DS] Puzzle & Dragons X: God Chapter / Dragon Chapter (GungHo Online Entertainment) – 5.782 / 174.953 (-7%). This title has been selling surprisingly steadily since launch, but there’s no doubt the price drop have helped. At least, sales didn’t drop off a cliff after launch…
  • 11./06. [3DS] Kirby: Planet Robobot (Nintendo) – 5.397 / 433.736 (-7%). If the Nintendo 2DS had any impact on sales, it was rather limited. It most likely prevented a bigger drop;
  • 13./11. [3DS] Pokemon Omega Ruby / Alpha Sapphire <RPG> (Pokemon Co.) {2014.11.21} (¥4.571) – 5.082 / 2.889.923 (+0%). Sales are pretty steady, and no doubt the Nintendo 2DS did help a bit;
  • 19./20. [3DS] Animal Crossing: New Leaf [Happy Price Selection] (Nintendo) – 2.908 / 93.181 (+14%). By far the title which benefitted the most from the Nintendo 2DS launch, which isn’t too surprising: budget re-release for budget handheld model is a pretty good mix!
  • 20./16. [3DS] Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games (Nintendo) – 2.722 / 238.675 (-10%). As we expected, the Wii U version was the first one to drop out of the Top 20.

Dragon Ball Fusions, on the other hand, is still on the rise, with 7 220 units sold (+3%). This Dragon Ball RPG has been selling pretty steadily since launch, in August, but in the past couple of weeks, sales have been slightly stronger than usual. It will be interesting to see how well the game does during weeks with public holidays, and of course during the Christmas holidays themselves.

Next, we have Minecraft: Wii U Edition, which is quite simply unstoppable. Despite Wii U sales cratering (almost literally), it’s still selling pretty steadily with 7 168 units sold this week (-7%). It has now sold 121 795 units since launch, according to Media Create.

Finally, it seems that Splatoon is on the way out, with only 3 396 units sold this week (-19%). The end of Splatfests, saturation, and the high price of the Wii U have been taking their toll on Splatoon sales. Still, it’s far from the end for Nintendo’s successful TPS, which should easily reach 1.5 million units at retail before the end of the year.

Media Create – Hardware

Hardware-wise, Week 36 was pretty interesting… and not just because of a certain slim console! It’s during that week that the Nintendo 2DS was finally released in Japan, and it’s off to a decent start with 18 754 units sold. It may not seem much at first glance, but it is a budget model for a handheld that has already had three others models (four if you count the original one).

As explained before, the key for the Nintendo 2DS will be the Christmas holidays. After all, Nintendo has quite clearly positioned the 2DS as a budget model for kids. Therefore, it’s mostly parents that will buy it for their kids, and when are they bound do that? In the few weeks just before Christmas. Sales are bound to drop next week, but they should pick up significantly when Pokémon Sun and Moon launches on November 18th.

What’s pretty interesting about the launch of the Nintendo 2DS is that it didn’t really have any impact on the sales of the other Nintendo 3DS models. Only the New Nintendo 3DS XL saw a slight drop in sales, but nothing major (and it doesn’t look like the Nintendo 2DS had anything to do with it). Basically, Nintendo 2DS sales are extra sales for Nintendo.

Since there’s no special models like the Pokémon bundles (released in February), the Nintendo 2DS has limited appeal for anyone who already own a Nintendo 3DS. This is not really a surprise, especially for Nintendo who already knew this: as explained above, they’re mainly targetting kids with the 2DS.

Overall, the Nintendo 3DS sold 38 140 units this week, boosted by the release of the Nintendo 2DS. That’s more than Week 35, but also last year during the same week, and it’s entirely thanks to the 2DS. Without this launch, there’s no doubt sales would have been down, especially with the lack of major release.

So far, the Nintendo 3DS has sold 21.181.128 units according to Media Create. To reach 22 million units before the end of the year, it needs to sell 818 872 units during the next 15 weeks. In other words, it needs 54 591 units / week, on average.

As for the Wii U, sales dropped to 2 703 units during Week 36, which is by far one of the lowest weeks ever for the platform. Unfortunately, without any new releases (let alone major ones), things are not going to change any time soon (if ever). There’s Paper Mario: Color Splash and LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens in October and… that’s pretty much it for Wii U releases, period.
