[Japan] Media Create sales for Week 46, 2017 (November 13th – November 19th) [Top 50]

Week 46 saw the releases of quite a few games in Japan, but the real star is quite obviously Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon. According to Media Create, it sold no less than 1 163 000 units for all versions combined (Ultra Sun + Ultra Moon + Double Pack counted as 2 units), which is surprisingly close to Famitsu’s number (1 199 000 units).

Here’s the rundown:

• Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon (stand-alone): 667 439 units sold
• Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon (Dual-Pack): 247 782 units sold (so 495 564 units)

The other entry in the Top 20 is Dragon Quest X Ver. 4.0, which sold about 45 000 units on all platforms combined. The real surprising bit is that the Wii U version outsold the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 versions, by a fair margin. It’s now unusual to find Wii U games in the Top 20, so to see one outselling the versions on much healthier platforms is quite the surprise.

Dragon Quest X Ver. 4.0 sold 24 386 units on Wii U, and 18 444 units on Nintendo Switch.

This week saw an increase in sales for the Nintendo Switch, but surprisingly, Super Mario Odyssey‘s are down (though not by much: only 15%). Sales remain quite strong, with 62 02 units sold, bringing the total to over 700 000 units (714 308 units to be precise). It does look like it will reach 1 000 000 units before the end of the year, as sales are bound to go back up pretty soon (as early as this week, in fact).

Splatoon 2, on the other hand, saw a slight increase in sales (+9%), with 25 118 units sold. This brings the total to 1 343 255 units. As the holiday period is drawing near, Splatoon 2 sales are only going to go up from now on.

As for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, it enjoyed an even bigger boost: +18%, with 16 532 units sold this week (819 004 units since launch). Super Mario Odyssey is closing in fast, as there’s no less than 100 000 units separating the two. This goes to show just how well the latest 3D adventures of Mario are selling!

And The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild enjoyed an even bigger increase in sales: +27%, with 7 004 units sold. Since launch, the Nintendo Switch version has sold over 641 853 units, which is a great result for a 3D Zelda game… and it’s only been 9 months since launch! The release of the Explorer’s Edition, next week (technically, tomorrow), should provide a further increase in sales.

Combined with the Wii U version, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild should be at around 800 000 units sold (even more if you count digital sales).

But even The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild‘s increase is nothing compared to Pokkén Tournament DX‘s, which really benefited from the Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon launch. The fighting game sold 6 642 units this week: that’s +72% compared to Week 45. It’s already been selling pretty steadily so far, and it looks like the upcoming holiday period is going to be a pretty good one for it.

Unfortunately, sales are once again down for Style Savvy: Styling Star, which sold “only” 6 523 units (-32%) during its 3rd week on the market. But as mentioned before, it’s truly during the holiday season that this particular game is going to shine (though it will not be nearly as bright as previous entries). So far, 48 349 units have been sold since launch.

Finally, Animal Crossing: New Leaf – Welcome amiibo saw yet another increase in sales this week (+12%), with 3 444 units sold. We can expect the launch of Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp to have a pretty positive impact on sales, which is something we will be able to witness starting next week! Since launch, the Welcome amiibo re-release has sold over 270 000 units.

As mentioned above, the Nintendo Switch saw another increase in sales / shipments this week, with 86 999 units sold. As expected, it’s only with the holiday season that we’re going to see a major increase in sales / shipments, though it’s not clear just how high the console will go. It will entirely depend on how many units Nintendo was able to make for the holiday period, and how many they are going to allocate for Japan.

The fact that sales didn’t drop off a cliff following the launch of Super Mario Odyssey, and actually remained steady (and at a much higher level than during “empty weeks” earlier this year), is a poisitive sign, that points towards healthy shipments for the holiday season. Of course, there will be many a disappointed player, as shortages are only going to get worse from now on.

The Nintendo 3DS also saw a noticeable increase in sales this week, but as expected, it’s rather limited compared to the significant boost provided by Pokémon Sun and Moon last year. The handheld sold 43 480 units this week, as opposed to 107 631 last year during the same week. Unfortunately, the post-launch week drop is not going to be pretty, though the public holiday on Thursday should soften it.

Unfortunately, with this week’s sales, it’s become even more apparent that the Nintendo 3DS will not end the year on the rise, as the difference between total 2017 and total 2016 sales is now quite small: only 38 000 units… and that’s without counting the Pokémon Nintendo 2DS bundle, that should be added to the 2016 total.

Finally, the Wii U sold 43 units.
