LEGO Dimensions to get new levels and characters until 2018
LEGO Dimensions comes out this Sunday in North America, and Tuesday in Europe, but what is different about this toys-to-life game compared to Skylanders and Disney Infinity? Well for one, the developers are planning to support it until (at least) 2018, with new levels and additional characters.
In fact, the first batch of add-ons will be available next week, with more coming pretty soon:
- Wave 2: December
- Wave 3: January
- Wave 4: March
- Wave 5: May
Mark Warburton from TT Games explained that the developers have a three-year plan for LEGO Dimensions, and that they were pretty satisfied with the technology they built for the game (especially regarding the toypad, which shouldn’t need to be updated). In other words, they are just going to release new toys in the future, and you shouldn’t expect a LEGO Dimensions 2.0 in September 2016 with an updated Toypad for example.
In the interview, Mark Warburton also assured fans who don’t want to spend an insane amount of money in figurines that they would be able to complete everything just with the toys form the Starter Pack:
“You can 100 per cent the game and get the Platinum trophy just from the base set. People have been playing Lego games for 10 years now, and we shouldn’t be offering anything less than that.”
He also explained why the Starter Pack costs $99.99:
“You get the game, you get the toy pad, you get 200+ odd level bricks. We think we’re offering a lot of value with that and there’s a lot of gameplay there. There’s also a huge offering [of extra content] if you’re a fan and want to get into that we support that. But if you’re only a fan of particular thing you can only get that.”
Finally, if you’re wondering why Portal is one of the franchises found in LEGO Dimensions, it’s because Jon Burton (the big boss of TT Games) is a huge fan of the series. They not only managed to have Portal in the game, but they also got Jonathan Coulton to record a new song for GLaDOS, along with Stephen Merchant and JK Simmons who came to record their own lines.
LEGO Dimensions (Wii U) comes out on September 27th in North America, and September 29th in Europe.
