Battle Tutorial video

XSEED also revealed the Battle Tutorial, which explains how the Battle System works:

Battle System

Next, some more details about the Battle System. As explained before, the Battle System of Lord of Magna: Maiden Heaven is a bit special. It encourages players to “bowl over” enemies, in order to kill as many as possible in one strike. There’s five different elements, each with its own strengths/weaknesses: Flame, Frost, Heaven, Earth and Void (no strengths or weaknesses for that one).

Before battles, you have to create your party and chose from 8 different characters (who all have their own element affinity, as well as a specific weapon).

Here’s an overview of each character:

  • Luchs [Void affinity] – He’s the game protagonist, and the only character with a Void affinity. His attacks have a very small range, and they’re not really powerful. He can only attack enemies directly in front of him. He’s best suited to a support role.
  • Charlotte [Flame affinity] – Lots of physical attack power. She uses a sword called “Flawless”, which has a short-range and allows her to strike all enemies in front of her, within a fan-shaped area.
  • Beatrix [Frost affinity] – Thanks to her bow gun (called Selbstgemachte Armbrust), she can attack enemies from a distance. She strikes them within a small circular area.
  • Elfriede [Earth affinity] – Thanks to her machinegun (called “OP4 Vulanca”), she can attack three times in a row. She strikes all enemies in a thin U-shaped area.
  • Gabriele [Heaven affinity] – She’s the only character with a Heaven ability. She attacks enemies in a small, circular area directly in front of her. She uses a weapon called “Pandora’s Box”, and her various skills allows you to see its contents.
  • Diana [Earth affinity] – She has a lot of physical attack power. She uses a spear called “Kirin”, which has a medium range, and allows her to strike enemies directly in front of her.
  • Francesca [Flame affinity] – She also has a lot of physical attack power (just like Charlotte). She uses a pair of classes called “Scar of God”, which allows her to strike enemies multiple times in a single turn.
  • Adelheid [Frost affinity] – She has a lot of physical defense. She uses a shield called “Scutum Absolutae” to blow back enemies which are close to her.

Romance, HEART Events, and Special Skills

In-between battles, Luchs can spend some downtime with the various faeries at the Inn. Doing so will allow hiw to grow his bonds with them, and to unlock four special skills (which can be physical attacks, healing skills, or support skills).

Those events are called “HEART Events”, and they’re part of the relationship-building system. Basically, they consist in Luchs getting to know the faeries better. The more time he spends with them, the more special skills he can unlock!

But before you can use special skills in battle, you need to build Tension. How to do that? Well, it’s actually quite simple… you just need to defeat enemies. There’s also another  way to build Tension: defeating enemies with a special skill. What’s more, if a character managed to defeat at least 10 enemies in a single turn, they will be able to get an extra turn and use another special skill if there’s enough tension.
