Media Create sales for Week 49, 2015 (Nov. 30 – Dec. 6) [Top 50]

Several games came out during Week 49 in Japan, but on Nintendo platforms, the new entries didn’t perform all that well. First, we have Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam Bros., which landed at #2 with 49 266 units sold during the first four days. This is significantly worse than the previous entry (roughly -50%, as Mario & Luigi: Dream Team sold 99 972 units at launch), and Nintendo was quite visibly expecting more.

According to Famitsu, only 20-40% of all copies sent to retailers were effectively sold. Of course, there’s still some weeks left before Christmas, but if sales don’t pick up during the next few weeks, retailers will have to slash the price in order to sell the remaining copies.

There’s various reasons for this weak performance: this is the second Mario & Luigi entry on Nintendo 3DS, and fans may have been soured by the previous one (which was quite divise). It’s also possible they’ve simply had their fill on Nintendo 3DS. Besides, Nintendo didn’t promote the game much until close to release, which most likely didn’t help.

The second entry of the week is Yo-kai Watch Dance: Just Dance Special Version, which had a really poor debut. It only sold 7 060 copies at launch (0-20% of all copies sent to retailers), which goes to show that not everything called Yo-kai Watch is bound to sell like hot pancakes with an extra layer of honey on top (especially on Wii U).

Obviously, this poor performance is due not only to the platform (the Wii U), but also the fact that the game only includes 10 songs: that’s really not a lot, especially for a dancing game sold at full price. We don’t quite know why Level-5 decided to only include songs from Yo-kai Watch (they could have easily added various songs popular with kids)… or why they didn’t even use all the Yo-kai Watch songs at their disposal!

Yo-kai Watch Dance: Just Dance Special Version may have “bombed”, it’s absolutely not the case of Yo-kai Watch Busters. The spin-off is still selling like crazy, especially with Christmas just around the corner. This week, the game sold 38 434 units… that’s an increase of 144% compared to Week 48!

This is due to:

• Level-5 now offering a new exclusive medals with copies of the game
• parents buying the game for their kids (for Christmas)
• the major content update, to be released this Saturday
• the second Yo-kai Watch movie, hitting theatres on December 19th.

Other entries that did not chart in Media Create’s chart, but did in Famitsu’s:

• #20 – Gudetama: Hanjuku de Tanomuwa (Nintendo 3DS): 3.623 units sold (20-40%)
• #24 – Dragon Quest X: All in One Package (Wii U): 3.136 (20-40%)

As usual, now that the holiday period is in full swing, sales of various family-friendly games on Wii U and Nintendo 3DS are on the rise. The most impressive ones are Splatoon (+48%, 35 256 units sold during Week 49 and 861 197 since launch: it might well reach 1 million before the end of the year!) and Super Mario Maker (+73%).

There’s also Disney Magic Castle: My Happy Life 2 (+15%), Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer (+17%), and various games making their comeback in the Top 20 thanks to the holiday boost:

• Rhythm Heaven: The Best+ (from #35 to #16), with 5 743 units sold
• The Legend of Zelda: TriForce Heroe (from #21 to #17), with 5 305 units sold
• Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon (from #26 to #19), with 5 107 units sold.

Of course, Monster Hunter X enjoyed great sales during its second week on the market, despite severe shortages (which are not over at many retailers, who need frequent shipments to keep up with demand). The game sold 332 478 units during Week 49, and it should definitely reach 2 million units sold at retail by next week.

Because of the holiday period, shortages might very well last until early next year, though at least Capcom seems to be able to keep up with demand… so far. As mentioned last week, Monster Hunter X may be a spin-off, it’s certainly not selling like one so. According to Tsutaya, it’s attracting older fans, who enjoyed Monster Hunter Portable 3rd but skipped Monster Hunter 4 and 4G. This is definitely music to Capcom’s ears!

Hardware-wise, sales are down for the Nintendo 3DS, but still above the 100 000 units threshold (which is pretty normal in December). During Week 49, 103 009 units were sold, which is less than last year during the same period (145 000 units). Since sales of the New Nintendo 3DS are stable, that means the drop is mostly due to the New Nintendo 3DS XL (which had a Monster Hunter X bundle last week).

The Nintendo 3DS kicked off the holiday period in a good way, and sales will most definitely keep going up for the next few weeks. It’s the same story for the Wii U, which is up week on week. It sold 32 604 units during Week 49, which is roughly 12 000 more than during Week 48. Just like the Nintendo 3DS, its sales should keep going up during the next few weeks, thanks to the holiday boost.

As seen with the Software sales above, Super Mario Maker and Splatoon are the reasons the Wii U is up in Week 49 compared to 2014 (32 604 units vs 24 469 units). It will be interesting to see just how high those two titles will be able to carry the Wii U during the holiday period!
