Media Create: week 20 (2015) was the worst week ever for the Japanese video game market
This may seem like an exaggeration and/or a rather sensational headline, but this is exactly what Media Create said in its weekly report: week 20 was the worst week ever for the Japanese video game market. During that week, only 235 000 games were sold in Japan, which is an all-time low.
In the past few years, the Japanese video game market has been doing worse and worse each year (2014 was the worst year since 1990, for example), and unfortunately, 2015 isn’t much better… far from it.
As a comparison, 392 000 games were sold during Week 19 in Japan, and 380 000 during Week 20 in 2014. The drop is pretty noticeable, especially if you look on Year to Date sales: 12 966 000 games so far in 2015, against 15 486 000 games in 2014 during the same period.
As for Puzzle & Dragons Super Mario Bros. Edition, it’s doing much worse than expected. After two weeks, it’s only sold a total of 232 683 units (which is far worse than Puzzle & Dragons Z, with roughly 500 000 units sold only during the first week!), and roughly 41% of all units sent to retailers for launch (around 393 000 copies) still haven’t been sold.
