Updated – Nintendo 3DS: new update available (9.6.0-24)
Update
This update includes an additional feature on PAL and North American systems… Nintendo added the web browser easter egg (a special version of Breakout) that was present on New Nintendo 3DS at launch in Japan (but was mysteriously removed from western systems).
To access it, go to the web browser, click on the “Tab” icon, open a new one, and then tap the first notes of the Super Mario Bros. theme.

Today, Nintendo released a brand new firmware update for the Nintendo 3DS (Ver. 9.6.0-24). It includes the following changes:
Changes to HOME Menu:
- A Home Menu Layout setting has been added to HOME Menu Settings. Users can save and load up to 8 layouts of the HOME Menu with different theme and software icon arrangements
- Japanese users can now pin badges to Folders.
Changes to Theme Shop:
- Additional categories have been added under “View More” for easier navigation of the Theme Shop
Improvements to system stability and usability:
- Further improvements to overall system stability and other minor adjustments have been made to enhance the user experience
Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo 3DS XL, and Nintendo 2DS Systems Only:
Changes to HOME Menu Settings
- amiibo Settings has been added to HOME Menu Settings. amiibo Settings allows users to register an amiibo owner and nickname, delete data written to an amiibo by supported software, or reset an amiibo*
*This feature will require a peripheral device scheduled to launch in 2015
To download this 9.6.0-24 update for the Nintendo 3DS, simply head to the System settings > Other settings > System update.
