In this post, we’re going to gather all the details, pics, GIFs, videos, etc. for Splatoon 2, straight from the Squid Research Lab. Naturally, we will keep it updated until the game’s launch, though we may end up going with monthly posts depending on the volume of content shared by the classiest bunch of scientists on Earth.

Today, the Squid Research Lab introduced Spykey, who happens to be Spyke’s assistant. While Spyke can add Abilities to your Gear, Spykey can perform “Gear Cleaning”: he can remove Abilities from your Gear, and return them to their original state. When he does that, the Abilities become “Ability Fragments”, which means you do not lose them completely when performing Gear Cleaning.
The Squid Research Lab specifies that you need several “Ability Fragments” in order to fill a vacant Gear slot with an Ability. In other words, an “Ability Fragment” does not have the same value as a full-fledged Ability. But at least, it gives you some flexibility: you can try and experiment with various setups, if you want. You can perform Gear Cleaning enough times to gather enough “Ability Fragments”, to make your own collection of Abilities.

Today, the Squid Research Lab shared an update about Gear, which serves as a nice refresher for Splatoon fans and a nice introduction for newcomers. Gear is divided in three parts:
- headgear
- clothing
- shoes
You can buy new Gear at the various shops located at the Inkling Plaza, in Inkopolis. Each piece of gear comes with some abilities, that provide various bonus (such as increased speed in ink, for example). The researchers note that fashion changed a lot in the two years since the original game, so players can expect some pretty refreshing Gear!

Next, here’s a look at The Reef, one of the new stages in Splatoon 2, and one of those playable during the Splatoon 2 Global Testfire:
試射会で遊べる「バッテラストリート」の短い映像を入手した。よく見ると、Nintendo Switch体験会からステージの形が変わっている。中央の橋が石造りのアーチ型になったことが目立つが、他にも細かな変化があるようだ。ハイカラスクエア周辺は、今まさに開発中ということか。#試射会 pic.twitter.com/PAVPxpzrPx

And here’s some details about the band members of Wet Floor:
Synth: This guy plays synthesizer and is the group’s founder. He’s out to restore some indie dignity to Inkopolis’s music scene that’s lately been taken over by giant pop stars. When it comes to songwriting, he lets others take the initiative. He prefers tinkering with sounds to performing, and the studio is a much more comfortable place for him than the stage.
Wet Floor also has two members that play guitar and provide vocals. The guy on the left is a fan of vintage rock sounds. You can hear it in the sharp, jangly rhythms of his riffs. The girl on the right is a faithful follower of the church of punk rock, and she carves out riffs with a more hunky, bass-heavy sound. These two don’t always see eye-to-eye, but when they’re in the groove, their two distinct sounds meld into a medley of magical music.
These two bring a fast-paced technical beat to the group’s sound that’s every bit as crucial as the members who play up front. The guy on bass has a trademark string-slapping style, while the drummer uses her multiple limbs to keep a driving, super-stable backbeat. The friendly rivalry these two share makes the band sizzle with thrilling rhythm.

Today’s update showcases the Musselforge Fitness stage, which is one of the two stages of the Splatoon 2 Global Testfire event!
#試射会 pic.twitter.com/iXJddajh9m— Splatoon(スプラトゥーン) (@SplatoonJP) March 17, 2017

Today’s update shows the new Ink Tank, which is also new. Thanks to new materials and a different shape, the Ink Tank is now lighter, but also sturdier. As pointed out by the Squid Research Lab, it looks like technology progressed by leaps and bounds in the Inkling world during the two years since the first Splatoon!

Today’s update shows the new model of the Spawn Point: it does look quite different, but it works the exact same way as in Splatoon. Quite interestingly, it looks like it was made a foreign company.. it looks like even Inklings cannot escape globalization!
