Yo-kai Watch: DVD/BR sales for the second movie (17th week)

The first Yo-kai Watch movie was a tremendous success, with over 7.6 billion in revenue just for the theatrical release. It then went on to sell over 100 000 units on DVD/Blu-Ray during the first week. And after that, it just kept selling week after week (though in small amounts). It was followed in December 2015 by Yo-kai Watch: Enma Daioh to Itsutsu no Monogatari da Nyan!.
Unfortunately, the second movie isn’t quite as successful (even though it’s still extremely popular). For starters, it didn’t manage to sell over 1 million tickets before the opening (unlike its predecessor), and it generated less revenue too.
And last week, the first sales data for the DVD and Blu-Ray release were revealed, and they’re not nearly as good as for the first movie:
- DVD: 32 004 units (as opposed to ~85 000 units for the first movie), best-selling animation DVD and best-selling DVD
- Blu-Ray: 4 565 units (as opposed to ~14 000 units for the first movie), #3 best-selling animation Blu-Ray, and #6 best-selling Blu-Ray
Combined, the two versions of Yo-kai Watch: Enma Daioh to Itsutsu no Monogatari da Nyan! sold about 36 500 units during the first week, which is a signficant drop compared to the original movie. This isn’t too surprising: the very first Pokémon movie was also the most popular.
The third Yo-kai Watch movie, called Yo-kai Watch: Sora Tobu Kujira to Sekai no Dai Bouken da Nyan (featuring animated and live-action scenes), will open on December 17th in Japan. It will be interesting to see if it manages to reverse the trend, or if sales will drop even further compared to the first two movies.
